Many lighter, faster 40-inch stripers have made their way north ahead of the largest fish. The region's stripers need vigilant watch over the commercial baitfish netters if we’re to bring these great game fish back to their former numbers. Since over 85% of the 5,422,022-pound quota for menhaden has already been caught, commercial fishermen have had their trip limit reduced to 25,000 pounds of menhaden as of June 12. Recreational striper fishermen owe much of their success to healthy baitfish populations. The current full moon tides should result in exceptional catches. Despite undesirably early high water temperatures, abundant menhaden schools have brought huge striped bass with them. But most excitingly, big stripers have migrated all the way up to New Hampshire.įifty-inch fish are being taken from the New Jersey coast up through the Cape Cod Canal, where the season’s first 50-pounders have been landed. On the saltwater front, fishing for haddock, pollock, flounder, and bluefish remains hot.
